According to Lenny and Tammy Magill, owners of The Glockstore in San Diego, California, responsible gun ownership not only implies being safe and proficient with firearms, but being armed and prepared to protect society.
Responsible Gun Ownership
Tammy and I have been doing business in the firearms industry for over thirty years. During that time, I frequently have heard the phrase ‘Responsible Gun Ownership’ and while I certainly agree with the intent of this message, I believe there is a much more important perspective to consider.
When I think of ‘Responsible Gun Ownership’ I believe it should mean that law abiding citizens like you and I, have a ‘Responsibility to Own Firearms’ not only for the self-defense of themselves and their families but for the protection of society as a whole.
We, the good guys, must be able to defeat evil, the bad guys, without relying on a government force to be there when something happens. For as we all might suspect, the bad guys, one day, could very well be our own government.
While this scenario is not pleasant to think about, it would be irresponsible to think that it could never happen. Furthermore, it would be even more irresponsible to think that the police or any other federal agency could possibly provide for our well-being and protection should any natural or man-made disaster or civil unrest occur.
I think the founding fathers of the United States of America understood this when they wrote the Second Amendment to the US Constitution. Everyone knows you should have an emergency kit of food, water, shelter and first-aid should a disaster occur. Why would anyone who is responsible not include firearms and ammunition in that emergency list?
So, the next time you hear someone say the words: ‘Responsible Gun Ownership’, I hope you’ll consider that, yes, as a gun owner, I can help the community and I will be more responsible to my family and society by owning firearms and being skilled in the safe and proficient use, care and storage of firearms.
