Delta changes policy for checking guns (VIDEO)

Delta Airlines quietly implemented a new rule for passengers traveling with weapons in their checked baggage, sources confirmed with NBC’s affiliate in Fort Lauderdale.

Bags containing weapons will be secured with a zip tie and marked with a special tag alerting handlers to send them to a service agent rather than directly on the general carousel upon arrival. Owners can then retrieve the bag from the agent after showing identification.

The process adds an extra layer of security than rules established by the Transportation Security Administration, which requires firearms to be stored in a locked box and checked.

Delta installed the policy change weeks after a gunman killed five people and injured six others inside the Fort Lauderdale airport in January. Authorities say the gunman brought his checked luggage to the bathroom after he got off a Delta flight to retrieve his firearm before he opened fire.
