The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency unveiled concept images for their modular drones that will fight alongside warriors in the battlefield in an announcement Tuesday.
DARPA launched their Transformer (TX) program in 2009 with the intent to provide troops with “flexible, terrain-independent transportation for logistics, personnel transport and tactical support missions for small ground units.” And last year the Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System (ARES) vehicle concept was chosen to move forward. Now, DARPA has released several concept images, illustrating how the ARES may look, Red Orbit reports.
The ARES will be designed with the warrior’s safety in mind and will aid in ferrying supplies to and from otherwise inaccessible locations.
“U.S. military experience has shown that rugged terrain and threats such as ambushes and improvised explosive devices can make ground-based transportation to and from the front lines a dangerous challenge,” DARPA said in its announcement.
With ARES, more ground units will have access to a broader range of supplies, casualty extraction, airborne surveillance and more.
“Many missions require dedicated vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) assets, but most ground units don’t have their own helicopters,” said DARPA program manager Ashish Bagai. “ARES would make organic and versatile VTOL capability available to many more individual units.”
