With calibers such as 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.8 Rem SPC, today’s AR-style rifles are ready for the field, offering sportsmen hunting options on a familiar platform.
Jim Ross with Daniel Defense holds class in the above video on the benefits of hunting with an AR platform such as modularity, lightweight, and faster follow-up shots if needed.
He starts with a DD5V4 chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor with a Leupold VX-5HD on top. The combo, says Ross, is good for everything from Georgia whitetails (DD is based in the Peachtree State) to bigger game out West.
After talking up the company’s “quintessential hunting rifle,” the new DELTA 5 bolt gun, chambered in .308, he moves back to the modern sporting rifles with a DD Mk 12.
“I hunt a lot of pigs here in Georgia, and this is my go-to rifle,” says Ross, calling the gun his personal favorite that he wouldn’t necessarily recommend for deer. “I’m also using this for varmint control– so coyotes up on the hunting property.”
Finally, Ross shows off a standard camo version of Daniel Defense’s Ambush series rifle, highlighting the sporting rifle’s two-stage Geissele SSA trigger, and other features. Offered in traditional .223 Remington as well as 6.8 Rem SPC, and .308 Win, the Ambush is meant for the field. Notably, he also uses a DD Wave suppressor, as use of a can while hunting has been greenlighted in over 40 states.
Either way you slice it, using an AR for hunting is a serious option these days.
