Owatonna, MN – -(Ammoland.com)- Coonan Inc. is a proud sponsor of the first ever Women’s Open Fun Shoot to be held at The “20” Rifle and Pistol Club in Medford, MN, on July 28 from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM.
The event is open to women and girls of all ages and firearms experience levels, from beginner to seasoned shooter.
The event is coordinated by Kathy Noaeill, and it’s a great opportunity for women who want to have some fun shooting their handgun or rifle. It’s also a chance to meet other women who share an interest in shooting sports and want to shoot in a friendly and supportive environment. Legendary gun designer Dan Coonan, inventor of the Coonan .357 Magnum Automatic 1911-style pistol, will be on hand to teach one-on-one firearms safety, use and range guidance, along with other tips. There will be other firearm safety instructors at the event as well.
The event was born when Kathy and her adult daughter attended a hunting and rifle safety class held at Cabela’s in Owatonna. The instructors were members of The “20” club, which Kathy and her husband later joined.
At her first club meeting, Kathy noticed something not entirely surprising: “There were 28 people there, but only one other woman, and she was into archery,” remembers Kathy. “I asked the club if they’d ever had an event just for women, and of course they said no. I told them that it wasn’t 1970 anymore, and that they could be doing much more to promote the club with women shooters.”
The club is member-supported, yet Kathy didn’t even know it existed until her class. “I’ve lived here 35-plus hears,” she explains, “and I didn’t know we had an outdoor range so close to home. We’re really excited to help the club with community outreach, especially as we raise awareness of the club and its mission with women in the area.
“Too many women are intimidated by men watching them shoot,” Kathy continues. “Many don’t have the same confidence when shooting with men. Or there are the women who have that gun given to them as a self-defense weapon and it sits locked in the closet or drawer, never to see the light of day. I wanted to arrange an event that was safe, friendly, informal, informative and most of all fun!”
The entry fee is $5, and participants must sign up by July 20. Participants are asked to bring ear plugs and safety glasses, but do not need to be a member of The “20” Rifle and Pistol Club. Contact Kathy Noaeill at 507-451-5383 or knoaeill@yahoo.com to register or for more information.
