Zombies in the Heartland, a competitive shooting match, brings in an array of competition shooters from all over the country. The draw of the crowd, as with most events he attends, is none other than pro shooter Jerry Miculek. Guns.com flagged him down to learn more about the guns he shoots in competition.

For starters, Miculek showed us his tricked-out Smith & Wesson M&P15. Ready to compete in the open class division, Miculek is able to sport a Vortex Razor 1-6×24 with JM-1 BDC reticle as well as the Vortex Razor Red Dot mounted on the side for closer shooting. Miculek also added his own custom handguard from F-1 Firearms, aptly named the Miculek Handguard. The last major upgrade added — a Mossberg JM Pro Adjustable Match trigger.
Miculek’s goal is to race as fast as possible without sacrificing reliability. “I’m always tinkering with the gas system,” Miculek said. “The gun has to be 100-percent or it’s not worthy of bringing to a competition.”
Smith & Wesson M&P9

For his pistol of choice, Miculek opts again for a Smith & Wesson, turning to the M&P9 Performance Center pistol. The Performance Center model features lightning cuts in the slide for recoil control in addition to a bevy of elevated features like an Apex barrel, custom trigger job, tungsten guide rod as well an extended magwell and magazine release to improve the performance of the gun. Shooting open class, he also runs the Vortex Venom red dot to stay on target. Reliability, again, is a key to his success and the M&P9 provides just that.
A particular point of pride and a ringing endorsement of the gun for Miculek was the combination of the extractor and magazine. “The magazine and gun combo are pretty flawless… when it comes out of the box I don’t have to worry about the extractor,” he said with a smile. The extractor is a major sticking point for many 1911 owners at competitions and one of the main reasons Miculek prefers his M&P9.

You know what that JM stands for in the title of this gun — Miculek shoots his own version of the Mossberg 930. He uses a speed loader stick and also opts for a 15-shot extension with Magnaport. On top, you’ll find a familiar friend in the Vortex Venom Red Dot. Just like all his other guns, this one is fixed to run in the open division.
Miculek said the benefit to the Mossberg 930 JM Pro Series comes down its ability to gobble ammo. “What I like about it is it’ll function at 100-percent with very light ammunition,” he said.
Reliability is a fixture Miculek comes back to time and time again and the King must be onto something. Miculek took the Open Senior Division Champion title at the Zombies in the Heartland event.
