The Madera Police Department say they are reevaluating the civilian ride-along program after gang members opened fire on a police cruiser Sunday evening occupied by an officer and 29-year-old Yesica Valencia, a member of the department’s citizen’s academy.
Police say the cruiser was following a white Mazda that had been speeding when the Mazda turned a corner then the occupants opened fire on the police car. About nine shots were fired, leaving the patrol car riddled with bullet holes and broken glass.
Valencia suffered minor injuries from broken glass and the officer is due to return to work Friday.
Thomas Matthew Garcia, 33, the suspected shooter, and Serena Arroyo, 26, the suspected driver, were both apprehended and face charges for attempted homicide. The third suspect, James Cruz, remains at large.
