Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper have recently received letters from the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, a Washington, D.C.-based civil rights group, over what they say is an increase in threats against Muslims resulting from the movie “American Sniper.”
“A majority of the violent threats we have seen over the past few days are (the) result of how Arabs and Muslims are depicted” in the film, Samer Khalaf, president of ADC, wrote in the letter.
According to Khalaf, the group has received “hundreds of violent messages,” and although many of the threats were through social media, Khalaf said the “ADC takes these threats seriously.”
The letter was written in hopes that Eastwood and Cooper would “help reduce the hateful rhetoric,” and asked them to “make a statement against the violent rhetoric being exhibited.”
“It is imperative for us, as Americans, to act now to prevent these verbal threats from turning into violent and physical hate crimes against Arab and Muslim Americans, or those perceived to be Arab or Muslim,” the letter concluded.
