Spike Lee, director of the upcoming movie “Chiraq” said that in the six weeks they were filming in Chicago, the city’s violence never ceased. Lee referred to the epidemic of violence as a “self-inflicted genocide” of “young black men” killing one another.
Almost 400 people were shot in Chicago in those six weeks, with 331 wounded and 65 killed, and Lee said that “guns are out of control in America,” one of the messages both Lee and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel hope to convey in the film.
