Columbus, OH –-(Ammoland.com)-The Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) has entered the fray over the listing of wolves on the Endangered Species List.

Last week, the group asked the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to develop a plan to introduce wofves across the nation.

The petition to FWS called for a nationwide “recovery” program for the wolves, something they say has not been developed.

The Center also stated in its release, “existing recovery plans for wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains and upper Midwest are out of date and apply to a small fraction of the wolf’s historic range” and that wolf populations be established in “suitable habitat in the Pacific Northwest, California, Great Basin, southern Rocky Mountains, Great Plains and New England.”

The CBD is basically asking the Fish and Wildlife Service to reintroduce wolves to areas where they have not existed in decades. This raises numerous issues.

Sportsmen throughout the Great Lakes area, where wolves have long been on the Endangered Species List, have seen their hunting dogs attacked by wolves for years. Farmers in the Great Lakes and the Rocky Mountain regions have spent years dealing with wolf predation of their livestock. Expanding the area where wolves reside will only increase these problems.

“In this group’s dream world, wolves will be roaming from coast to coast and states will be handcuffed in their ability to effectively manage them as they will all be under Endangered Species Act protection,” said Rob Sexton, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) vice president for government affairs.

“This could easily open the door for many negative consequences for American communities.”

The FWS will now review the petition. Should it agree with the petition or be forced to implement it through court action, the entire national wolf policy will have to be rewritten.
