A 54-year-old man was shot and killed by police at a Livermore, California, mobile home park following an hours-long standoff Thursday night.
The man, whose name has not been released, apparently set his home on fire before walking outside with a shotgun and firing off several rounds.
Authorities were first called to the mobile home park after the man began walking around with a rifle and challenging his neighbors to fight. But when police arrived on the scene, the man barricaded himself inside his home.
While inside, the man made suicidal comments, fired several rounds, and refused to comply with multiple commands from law enforcement. Efforts to end the standoff in a peaceful manner failed when the man set his home on fire, then emerged and fired several rounds from a shotgun.
Officers returned fire, striking the man. Medical aid was rendered, but the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reports indicate the man, who has been married twice and was previously accused of domestic abuse, may have been having marriage problems at the time of the incident. The man’s wife did not wish to speak with reporters.
