California – -(AmmoLand.com)- Two steps forward and one step back Friday, September 28th, 2018, as decisions are announced from Governor Brown’s office. It seems that the Second Amendment community can’t catch a break without paying a price in return.
The two anti-2A bills were vetoed by Governor Jerry Brown Friday, September 28, SB 221 and SB 1177. SB 221(Weiner), aimed to put an end to the gun show in Daly City, eliminating the only gun show in the San Francisco area and was part of a wider movement to shut down gun shows throughout the state.
In Brown’s veto letter, he cites the local board of directors and community as the authority to make decisions on such matters.
This is welcomed news to California Rifle & Pistol Association, as SB 221 would have set a precedent for gun shows throughout the state. We have already been fighting for the existence of gun shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, Orange County Fairgrounds and Ventura Fairgrounds; SB 221 would have just aided the opposition in their malicious efforts.
SB 1177 (Portantino, D), was a repeat of a similar bill from the last legislative session. Despite having been vetoed by Governor Brown twice before, Senator Portantino attempted to resurrect the one long-gun a month bill restricting long gun sales for Californians. For SB 1177, Brown’s veto letter refers to last session’s similar bill which he had vetoed before and that his views had not changed. CRPA staff has predicted this outcome since the bill’s introduction; Portantino just can’t seem to get the idea of restricting Second Amendment rights out of his head.
Senator Portantino can claim one win today with the passing of SB 1100. Despite the voracious efforts of CRPA staff, members and allies, long guns may not be sold to California adults under the age of 21. This fight, however, will not end with this signing. CRPA will be at the helm, fighting for the rights of California adults’ right to purchase long-guns.
