Actually having to “bug out” may not be pleasant, but shopping for it can be fun. Companies showing their wares at SHOT Show 2017 had everything prep-minded folks could possibly need, and then some. Here’s a sampling:
Carry that water
HydraPak has new and updated ways to pack this most essential of supplies. The company specializes in squishy but durable water containers. The Seeker is a new collapsible, flask-shaped pouch that comes with a carry case. The 2-liter size is $18 and the 3L is $20. It comes with a tiny drawstring pouch. Optional is the “trek kit,” that adds a pressurized tube and squeeze valve to give your gear or dog a rinse. Seeker kits will be in stores later this month.
The Full Force reservoir is available now. This open-top, easy-clean design is updated with an improved mouthpiece. It’s $48 in 2L size and $52 in 3L.
Stash bottles, the company’s popular squishable drinking bottles, are now available in four new colors. The 750 ml size is $18; the 1L is $23.
Fix what breaks
Gerber’s new Center Drive multi-tool with optional bit set offers flip-open access to a plethora of tools. “We can’t keep up with orders for this one,” said a company rep. The next production run will hit stores February 01 MSRP is $89 and then add $10 for the bit set.
Cut wood
Schrade’s new packable ax, the SLAXE2, should be a quick cutter with its titanium-coated blade. A strike-style firestarter is hidden inside the handle. It’s in stores now for $45 MSRP.
Start a fire
Zippo has rolled out some hot new matches. Their windproof survival matches, with an optional, pack-friendly waterproof carrier, will be in stores around June. A set of 10 matches will retail for $9.95 or $11.95 with the carrier.
Keep the heat
The Seirus CoreShield storm layer jacket is really toasty, water-resistant, and windproof. This writer donned the coat at SHOT Show and the feeling of increased warmth was immediate. It’s currently available with an MSRP of $249.99, with real prices quite a bit lower.
Navigate and stay connected
MyTopo.com makes any map you want, of any US location you want, in your choice of topo, aerial, hunting section, or private land boundary formats.
Motorola isn’t just about radios anymore. Their new light switches modes from lantern to flashlight. In the base is a compass, thermometer, and a micro USB port. It’ll be on Amazon in May for $29.99. The company also makes zipper pull-attached compass/light or UV detector/light devices and weather radios.
Be ready to obtain food and maintain security
A firearm doesn’t have to be heavy. Chiappa’s Little Badger is on shelves in .22LR, .22WMR, and .17HMR. It sports a threaded barrel for those who want to be extra stealthy, and Picatinny rail is an option for adding optical accessories. The folding stock and 2.9 pounds of weight makes it very portable. MSRP is $217.
Pack it all up
VooDoo Tactical has a vast selection of packs. New for 2017 is their HydroRunner/Recon Pak, with an MSRP of $105. The company is going for a less overtly tactical look in this year’s products. Pursuant to that, laser-cut MOLLE attachments lend an urban, low-profile flavor to a pack that’s ready for serious work.
