A dispute between soccer players and a referee in Brumadinho, Brazil, over the weekend resulted in a physical altercation that ended in the referee pulling a gun on the players.
Gabriel Murta, who is apparently a law enforcement officer when he’s not refereeing soccer games, had to undergo a psychological evaluation and is now facing disciplinary action, which could include suspension or even a permanent ban, for displaying a gun during the game, an act which was caught on video by spectators.
The dispute, which was said to be over a red card, escalated when the players involved kicked and slapped Murta, who in turn went to the changing rooms and returned with a pistol in his hand. Murta said he was protecting himself and retrieved the gun only after the altercation turned physical and he felt threatened.
