The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Border Corruption Task Force has arrested a 36-year-old Border Patrol agent in the San Diego area with a significant amount of meth and cocaine.
Although the agency has not released the agent’s name, they have disclosed they were assigned to the San Diego Sector and had been with the border force for a decade.
The agent was charged with attempted distribution of six pounds of methamphetamine and more than 15 pounds of cocaine, in addition to bribery charges.
“The U.S. Border Patrol is cooperating with all agencies involved in this investigation,” said Chief Patrol Agent Richard A. Barlow in a statement. “Border Patrol agents are held to the highest standards, and we remain committed to performing our duties for the American people in the most professional way.”
According to the agency, the San Diego Sector is the smallest geographically but was the busiest sector for illegal entries, accounting for more than 40 percent of nationwide apprehensions in the early 1990s.
Earlier this year, an independent review panel named by the Homeland Security secretary blasted CBP’s disciplinary process as being too slow to be effective and recommended increased use of post-employment polygraphs as well as a two-year probationary period for new agents to help stamp out corruption.
