Lincoln, NE -(AmmoLand.com)- Billy Miller of Blair relied on consistency during a weekend of inconsistent conditions to top the field in the 47th annual Cornhusker Trapshoot on Saturday at the Nebraska Trapshooting Association home grounds.
The junior won the Cornhusker Cup by hitting 143 of 150 targets over two days. He hit 72 of 75 at 16 yards Friday on a breezy, but mostly dry, day. Rain soaked the ground overnight and shooters on Saturday were greeted with standing water, mud and drizzle. In the handicap on Saturday, Miller shot a 71 at 24 yards to take the big prize.
“You’ve gotta be consistent in this game, no matter what the conditions are,” Miller said. “But we’ve shot a lot in the rain in practice this year and I think that helped me.”
Miller may have snuck up on a strong field that included many of the top shooters from last year, including 2015 Cup champion Dean Rogers of Papillion-LaVista South. That didn’t concern him, though.
“I didn’t think anyone was looking for me to be in this, but I’ve shot against the best shooters in our conference,” he said.
Another contender was Zack Krzyzanowski of North Platte, who shot at 142 for second place. He was third in 2015.
Jade Krolikowski of Centura shot a 142 to win the ladies division after finishing third last year. Last year’s champion, Katie Petersen of Omaha Marian, took second this year.
Lincoln Southeast Black dethroned two-time defending champion Omaha Creighton Prep Blue as high school team winner, Platte Valley of Scottsbluff won the 4-H team crown and Papillion-LaVista took the ladies team title.
A record 2,612 shooters in junior and senior high competed over three days.
