Black Lives Matter leader facing theft charges (VIDEO)

Despite pending theft charges, Black Lives Matter leader Rev. Westley West said he will continue to seek a seat on the Baltimore City Council, asserting he has done nothing wrong.

“The truth needs no support, and therefore I’m not here to speak on the case, but I’m here to move forward,” West said during a news conference last week. “The truth takes a while sometimes to reveal itself.”

West is accused of stealing over $700 by using the bank account and routing information for a company he was employed by for less than a month, but West’s attorney, Donald Wright, indicated he and his client were concerned over the timing of the allegations.

“The incident is alleged to have occurred over half a year ago,” Wright said. “Pastor West announced his candidacy for the 7th District City Council seat on Sunday, and one day later we’re seeing [media] reports about this charge.”

In addition to theft, West also faces charges for inciting a riot, disorderly conduct and other charges related to September protests in Baltimore surrounding the Freddie Gray case.
