Bill to Ban High-Capacity Magazines Surges Firearms Magazines Purchases
Fort Worth, TX –-(Ammoland.com)- A bill written by Democrat Representative Carolyn McCarthy was formally introduced on the House floor last week with the intention of banning ammunition magazines carrying more than 10 rounds.
The introduction of the bill follows a mass killing in Tucson that left 19 individuals shot and 6 dead.
“I know what it’s like to have tragedy brought to your life in a split second by a madman with high-capacity ammunition magazines. I’m working to stop it from happening again,” claimed McCarthy.
“We need comprehensive reform to reduce the number of people hurt or killed by gunfire in America, but one simple way we can do that is by keeping the worst tools of mass murder away from the general public. This nation has come together before to support this simple, commonsense measure, and it is the law in several states right now. It is a small sacrifice that law-abiding gun owners can make once again in order to increase everyone’s safety.”
Online firearm and ammunition retailer Cheaper Than Dirt! reported seeing a surge in orders for magazines holding more than 10 rounds in the past few days, with 30 round Glock magazines leading sales. Online sales of Glock pistol had also spiked and, at the time of publication of this article, the company was completely sold out of all 9mm Glock handgun models.
“It’s not unusual to see panic buying when legislation like this is introduced,” said Cheaper Than Dirt Chief Operating Officer Roberta Wilson.
“Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and we’ll see this bill die in committee. Cheaper Than Dirt has always advocated responsible gun ownership and laws such as the one proposed by Congresswoman McCarthy only deprive law abiding gun owners. Criminals, by definition, ignore such laws and will remain unaffected.”
Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg disagreed, saying ““High-capacity gun magazines are tools for murder. This common-sense legislation would make it more difficult for someone to carry out a killing spree. Before 2004, these ammunition magazines were banned, and they must be banned again. I am proud to partner on this effort with Rep. McCarthy, who has worked tirelessly throughout her career to curb gun violence in our nation.”
