A tense situation in Richmond on Tuesday morning ended with the fatal shooting of a man who was armed with an ax and a knife.
Witnesses say the suspect was wearing a kilt, had the ax in one hand, the knife in the other, and appeared to be very angry and agitated as he walked down the street around 9:30 a.m.
Police received multiple 911 calls about the man, but when they arrived on the scene, the suspect ignored repeated commands to put down the weapons. During the confrontation, officers deployed a Taser, but at that point, the suspect – weapons still in hand – charged at the officers and shattered the window of a patrol car.
Soon thereafter, the suspect was shot in the stomach. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. He was later identified as 23-year-old Alexander J. Schoessel of Chester, about 15 miles south of Richmond.
Authorities recovered an ax from the scene, as well as what was described as a “very long knife.”
