Atlanta mom accused of shooting 4-year-old son in the back (VIDEO)

A 41-year-old mother is behind bars after she allegedly shot her 4-year-old son in the back at their Atlanta apartment Tuesday morning.

Patricia Todd is jailed on charges for aggravated assault, tampering with evidence and cruelty to children, while the toddler, identified by neighbors and family as Jamari Todd, remains in critical condition.

“It is going to touch your heart when you’re dealing with such a grave injury to such a young person,” said Maj. Adam Lee, a nearly 30-year veteran with the Atlanta Police Department.

It was originally believed the boy was shot in the chest and authorities were working to determine whether the gunshot was self-inflicted or accidental, but upon further investigation it was discovered the boy was actually shot in the back.

After the boy was removed from the home, officers recovered a handgun from inside.

Belinda Weems, who lives next door, said she never heard the gunshot, but did hear the mother yelling before seeing the boy carried out by paramedics later. Weems said Jamari “is a good little boy” and he and her 9-year-old son often play together.

“I don’t know what could have gone on,” she said. “It is shocking to me.”

Todd waived her first court appearance Wednesday and is due back in court in two weeks.
