A group of men and women are volunteering their time and expertise to protect the country’s border and keep potential enemies at bay.
Several times a year, the group, known as the Arizona Border Recon, sets up a six to nine mile perimeter along the border, where they patrol the area for seven days and seven nights. During that time, they attempt to push any illegal activity into the nearby area occupied by the Border Patrol.
Field operations director Tim Foley confirms his group is not a militia or an organization otherwise interested in overthrowing the government, but rather “an extra set of eyes and ears” for the grossly understaffed Border Patrol.
The group has been helping to protect the border near Sasabe, Arizona, for about five years now, but according to Foley, the country is beginning to see a new type of threat.
“We have the war on drugs and the war on terror and it seems that they are combining right here on the border,” Foley explained to local media.
Foley said the group, all of whom are concerned about terrorism in their home country, tries to stop “anything and everything” from crossing the border, which includes, he feels, current threats of Palestinians, Afghans and Syrians. Last week six middle eastern men, who were believed to be smugglers, were arrested while attempting to illegally cross the border.
Foley believes those attempting to cross the border illegally are typically up to no good and likened it to friends using the front door to your home, not the back window.
“If you want a better life then go through the front door,” Foley said. “Do it the right way. Don’t come sneaking underneath in through the back door through the window because that makes you suspect.”
