A sheriff from Pulaski County, Arkansas, is under a bit of scrutiny after spending more than $26,000 to purchase cowboy hats for his deputies.
“We do it because we’re trying to catch up. Every law enforcement agency in the area has a hat and we don’t. Now we have a hat,” said Pulaski County Sheriff Doc Holladay.
Deputy Elza, who prefers the white cowboy hat, said he wears his hat every day and it just feels “natural.”
Sheriff Holladay has taken a few months to buy the two different kinds of hats – a white, straw Resistol hat and a black Stetson hat for a more “classy look.”
But in addition to looking good, Holladay said the hats, which are an optional part of deputies’ uniforms, serve as a means of sun protection and help set them apart from other law enforcement agencies.
