The National Rifle Association’s Carry Guard Expo starts this Friday in Milwaukee and is expected to be met with anti-violence groups protesting on the streets.
The NRA has described the expo–taking place at the Wisconsin Center on Friday through Sunday — as an educational opportunity for people interested in self-defense and concealed-carry methods and tactics.
“This is a celebration of the self-defense, concealed-carry and personal protection lifestyle,” Jason Brown, NRA Media Relations, told Fox 6 News.
“We’re framing this event as an educational experience for folks to come in, to see the latest product, to talk to experts, take courses and training,” continued Brown.
The gun lobby has touted Carry Guard as “America’s most comprehensive insurance and legal coverage” for gun owners and has said the program is meant to provide peace of mind and protection for those who may have to use their firearms for self-defense. However, anti-violence groups disagree and are ready to protest what they see as an insult to those who have been killed by gunfire in the city.
“The NRA is not welcomed in Milwaukee,” said Anneliese Dickman of the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort (WAVE).
“The NRA is here in Milwaukee, because they want to make a profit off of the pain that we feel here from gun violence,” Dickman added.
While the NRA plans to hold a concealed-carry fashion show at the expo on Friday night, protesters with WAVE and other groups will demonstrate with their own fashion show meant to remember victims of gun violence.
The demonstrations are set to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, and groups have vowed to keep the protests peaceful.
