YouTuber Giacomo Di Muro made an airsoft BB gun using a lathe and a milling machine — then switched to steel pellets and cranked up the pressure to see what it could do.
In the above video, Giacomo says, “I made some minor modifications” moving from airsoft pellets under 130 psi of pressure to more substantial BBs at over 4,000.
“So I decided to disintegrate some things,” he says, before wasting some Coke cans, a couple sheets of drywall, and some wine glasses under the close eye of an Edgertronic HSV slo-mo cam. The result is kinda hypnotic, especially on the glass.
How powerful is this contraption compared to your typical air rifle? Well, the celebrated Girardoni air rifle used by the Lewis and Clark had a working pressure of 800 psi and was able to plotz out about three dozen .46 caliber lead balls through a 1-inch pine board at 100 yards before its reservoir was depleted. Most precharged pneumatic (PCP) rifles today range anywhere from 1,000-3,000 psi. So in other words, the 4K mark is pretty sweet.
We’d like to see what kind of velocity he could get with some longer barrels.
Would you like to know more about the build process? (Rhetorical question.)
