An automobile accident in Osage County, Oklahoma, last week claimed the life of a 98-year-old man who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor 75 years ago.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Dominic Baldrachi ran off the road, hit a metal gate, a tree and a steel post, before driving through a creek and hitting an embankment. Authorities believe Baldrachi was “apparently ill” at the time of the wreck and not wearing his seatbelt.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Baldrachi was in the U.S. Army, stationed at Pearl Harbor, but visiting a friend at the naval base on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese bombed the United States. But reports indicate he immediately sprang into action, showing sailors how to assemble machine guns for a counter-attack.
Last year, Baldrachi was honored for his bravery during the attack on Peal Harbor.
