An 81 year old woke in his Detroit home on November 30th to the sound of his sliding glass door breaking. Someone had thrown a brick though the door and followed it inside. The homeowner, identified only as Dave, grabbed a .22 revolver and waited in his bedroom.
WDIV Local 4 News, the NBC affiliate in Detroit, interviewed Dave shortly after the incident. “I’ve had this firearm since 1955 and it’s never been fired,” Dave said.
The intruder may have presumed that the house, which WDIV Reporter Roger Weber describes as “upscale,” was not occupied. But it was. The alert octogenarian took his revolver and stood about eight feet from his bedroom door and waited for the burglar to come to him.
“You whole system is shocked,” Dave said about the incident. “You don’t see what’s going on. You don’t know what’s going on.”
Yet Dave managed to stay quiet and calm. When there was no chance that his presence would go undetected, Dave defended himself.
“I waited a minute, or more … door opened and there was the intruder,” he said. “I didn’t say anything to him and I discharged the weapon.”
The intruder opened the door. Dave fired. The shocked burglar moved back into the hall and Dave fired again. He fired a third time as the man fled down a staircase and out the way he had come in.
Authorities assume that two of the three shots hit the intruder, as there is only one bullet strike in the house (the last shot that was fired as the man fled down the stairs).
The burglary happened in daylight hours. Early. And the homeowner was close enough to the suspect to get a reasonable identification. Police are looking for a black male, around 20 years of age, about 5’10” and 175 pounds. He may well have two new holes in him that will require medical attention.
