An 8-year-old boy was charged with murder this week after he viciously beat a 1-year-old girl to death last month in a Birmingham home while the children’s mothers left them home alone, unattended to go clubbing.
Authorities say the boy became extremely agitated when the baby, Kelci Lewis, who died from severe head trauma and major internal organ damage, wouldn’t stop crying and he “viciously attacked” her, ultimately causing her death. After the child killed the baby, he then placed her in her crib, where she spent the remainder of the night.
Kelci’s mother, 26-year-old Katerra Lewis, was also charged with manslaughter, although her attorney questions the authenticity of the charge. Police said Lewis and her roommate, the homeowner, left seven children, ranging in ages from 1- to 8-years-old, home alone so they could go out for the night.
Authorities added that had Lewis checked on her children immediately upon returning home, the baby’s life could have been saved, but she didn’t. Lewis came home around 2 a.m., but the police weren’t called until 10:30 a.m., after Lewis found the baby unresponsive in her crib. Paramedics transported Kelci to a local children’s hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The 8-year-old is in DHR custody and Lewis apparently turned herself in to authorities, but posted a $15,000 bond and was released 90 minutes after being taken into custody.
Emory Anthony, Lewis’ attorney, said she believes prosecutors are “trying to allege that she was reckless or negligent in some particular way,” which they deny. Anthony said there’s a different side to what actually transpired that night and that her and her client will “deal with that.”
“This is by far one of the saddest cases that I’ve witnessed and been a part of ever since I became a police officer,” said Birmingham Police Lt. Sean Edwards, who added that no amount of schooling or training can prepare for something of this magnitude.
