Authorities are investigating after more than $20,000 worth of guns were stolen from a police officer’s home in Memphis on Wednesday.
In addition to the 10 handguns, five rifles, and two shotguns, crooks made off with jewelry and coins, for an overall value of just under $23,000.
Area residents say crime has been on the rise in the neighborhood, but the broad day break-in still left some in shock.
“It’s shocking to me… because, I mean, they police, come on now,” said neighbor Mary Robinson, noting the possibility that the suspects didn’t know the home belonged to a police officer.
According to data gathered by local media, over the last 90 days there have been 67 reports of burglaries in the one-mile radius surrounding the officer’s home.
The officer, who was not publicly identified, declined to talk with reporters, stating that it was an ongoing investigation. Authorities confirmed the guns were taken out of four gun safes, but it’s unclear if the safes were secured.
