An exchange of gunfire early Monday morning between park rangers and suspected poachers at South Africa’s Kruger National Park resulted in the death of two poachers, while a third escaped unharmed.
The poachers were believed to be after the park’s rhinos, who have become critically endangered over the last several years. In fact, the park houses the world’s last male white rhino, who is protected by multiple armed guards who stay with him 24 hours a day.

The majestic animals are revered for their horns, which are believed to have extraordinary medicinal powers and can fetch a hefty $30,000 per pound on the black market.
