A 16-year-old boy from Granite Falls, North Carolina, died after he accidentally shot himself while showing off a gun to a friend via Skype.
Dekota Smith was at his grandparents’ home when the shooting occurred. According to his uncle, Gregory Johnston, Dekota was on his cell phone, videoing chatting with his friend when the friend said he heard a gunshot and the next image was of the ceiling. The friend said he immediately knew something was wrong.
Authorities are working to determine how the teen gained access to the gun and did not immediately say to whom it belonged. Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones used the tragedy to stress the importance of gun safety.
No charges have been filed at this time, but once the investigation is completed, the case will be forward to the district attorney fro review.
