A 12-year-old girl was accidentally shot and killed by a constable serving an eviction order at an apartment in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, Monday morning.
The family was more than two months behind on rent and employees of the apartment complex were present when the eviction notice was issued. According to witness accounts, Pennsylvania State Constable Clarke Steele knocked at the door and Donald Meyer opened the door, then quickly closed it.
When Meyer opened the door again, he had a .223-caliber rifle aimed at Steele, who in turn, unholstered his .40-caliber service weapon and fired a single shot, striking Meyer in the left arm. But the bullet passed through Meyer’s arm and struck the man’s 12-year-old daughter, Ciara “CC” Meyer, who was standing behind him.
The girl, who stayed home from school that day because she wasn’t feeling well, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Donald Meyer was transported to a hospital for medical care and now faces charges for aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats, and reckless endangerment. He is being held without bail.
Authorities said the rifle was fully loaded with a 30-round magazine and a bullet in the chamber.
Steele, whose family said is “very distraught over the situation,” took a leave of absence.
