Miami-Dade’s annual “Bikes Up, Guns Down” event resulted in one man’s death and numerous arrests over the weekend after riders took to the streets, despite warnings from law enforcement not to do so.
Participants say it’s a way to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but authorities said it’s dangerous and illegal. Local law enforcement described the scene as chaotic when dozens of riders on motorcycles, dirt bikes and ATV’s of all sorts ignored traffic laws and took to the streets.
One rider was seriously injured when he hit a truck. A couple hours later, another man, Javis Charles, 24, was killed after colliding with a Toyota Camry.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion, 35 people were arrested on various charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle, and 74 vehicles were towed. In addition, authorities recovered three guns during the demonstration.
